Our book club met in December to discuss Ina Garten’s new book. A group of elementary teachers gathered on a Thursday evening to a warm dinner of an Ina inspired meal.
Teachers make for excellent book club discussion because of our love for routine, structure and reading. The consonance on Ina’s book was two thumbs up. We loved her attitude towards life and food. Her healthy focus on good food, good company, and a relaxed atmosphere is just our style.
I took a tip from Ina to entertain my teacher friends and set up a buffet on my kitchen counter for everyone to help themselves. It was easy and more relaxing. Being organized, I prepared a good deal in advance.
I used Ina’s recipe for onion and fennel soup and made it the night before. All I needed to do was reheat and it made my house smell so good. It was a chilly night so I had Ina’s hot spiced apple cider ready when my guests arrived…Ina always has a cocktail! This made everyone feel cozy and get into the holiday spirit. Roast chicken, herb roasted potatoes and bread pudding for dessert rounded out the evening. They weren’t all Ina’s recipes but they were inspired by her and the cozy winters night.
Here are some of the questions we discussed.
It is a pleasure to cook for people you care about because they feel special and remember the feeling of community. We all have a hunger for good food, great books and warm friendships. I hope you read Ina’s book at your book club and share a meal with people you love. Happy reading and happy eating!
