Aristocratic Americans

Jackie & Lee

Jacqueline and her little sister Lee (born three years apart), dazzled the world with their vibrant wardrobes.

The sisters adored traveling, horseback riding and always made headlines everywhere they went as stylish, aristocractic Americans.

While Jackie was known as the First Lady of Style, for years Lee served as her stylist, helping her find just the right look for state dinners and official outings.

Author Truman Capote adored Lee… “I can’t think of any woman more feminine than Lee Radziwill—not even Audrey Hepburn.”

Five lessons from Lee Radziwill:

  • Never shy away from bright colors. They make you look bolder.
  • Pick a signature color and own it. Think “blush & bashful!”
  • You can never have too many sunglasses… I wonder if Lee helped Jackie pick out hers?
  • Layer in accessories for sparkle…Lee said, “I like to create rooms which are essentially traditional —and then add touches of the bizarre and the delicious.”
  • Curate a wardrobe filled with elegant pieces like fur coats, trench coats, and A-line dresses. Be sure to dress well for any occasion, whether it be attending a dinner party or buying groceries at the supermarket.

P.S. How to be Parisian wherever you are

I always begin a room with the rug; it is literally the foundation of the space. I then go on to the furniture. ~Lee Radziwell

Chanel No 5: a revolutionary perfume

Ohh, that smells nice! Can I have a squirt? My twelve-year-old daughter asked while brushing her hair in my bathroom. We were both getting ready for the day. The squirt that she wanted was Chanel No 5. Remember that scene in The Parent Trap when Hayley Mills tells her grandfather she’s making a memory and says, “You smell like peppermints and tobacco?” I know that is what my daughter is doing…making memories with her nose.

I’m never monogamous with perfume…I love it too much. Some days, you want to recreate a feeling from a memory. Perfume has that power…the smell of a fragrance can be recalled and bring a flood of memories. I remember being eighteen-years-old shopping in Galeries Lafayette…Chanel No 5 will forever make me feel like that eighteen-year-old girl shopping in Paris on a rainy summer day.

I like knowing that Chanel No 5 was created during the summer of 1920 when Gabrielle Chanel went on holiday on the Cote d’Azur with her lover the Grand Duke Dimtri Pavlovich.

There she learned of a perfumer, a sophisticated chemist, Ernest Beaux who had worked for the Russian royal family.

Beaux used a mixture of 128 ingredients highlighting jasmine, rose, sandalwood and vanilla.

Gabrielle Chanel was obsessed with cleanliness and wanted something that would last until bedtime. Beaux mixed floral extracts with aldehydes…chemicals that artificially gave a clean smell but would last throughout the entire day.

Beaux made up ten versions of the scent, numbered 1-5 and 20-25. Coco chose her lucky number five…et voilà!

Coco invited Beaux and friends to a popular restaurant on the French Riviera to celebrate and decided to spray the perfume around the table. Women would stop in their tracks and ask what the fragrance was and where it came from.

This was the moment that confirmed to Coco that it was going to be a revolutionary perfume. She had changed perfume forever.

For ninety-eight-years this iconic scent has remained the Mona Lisa of fragrances.

For me, wearing red lipstick, my grandmother’s jewelry and Chanel No 5 makes me feel like everything will be fabulous because I have a fabulous memory. It’s my good luck charm that makes me feel like I smell…refined, chic and French…shopping at Galeries Lafayette

Every woman should own a bottle of Chanel No 5!

Merci Coco!

1. “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

2. “I can’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little, if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny and it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”

3. “Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside.”

4. “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”

5. “There is time for work, and time for love. That leaves no other time.”

6. “To be irreplaceable, you must be different.”

7. “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.”

Mermaid bath bombs

The kitchen is a swirl of purple, green and blue. Twelve-year-old girls are squealing. Flash back to 1988 and I’m feeling twelve again…wearing acid-washed jeans, making friendship bracelets and listening to 10,000 Maniacs. This feeling is just as I remember it, but better because it’s for my daughter Zooey. It was a full evening. We had pizza, made bath bombs (with glitter), dance skits were performed and there was swimming like mermaids. This is twelve.

My friend Angela and I met in yoga teacher training. I remember going around in a circle and introducing ourselves. Angela said that she was a certified aromatherapist from Switzerland and my inner twelve-year-old wanted to say, “let’s be friends!” She is my friend and fellow mermaid and Zooey and I adore her bath bombs. We gave them as party favors at her last birthday and this year, we wanted Angela to show us how to make them.

Angela’s products are part of who she is…a Swiss/American aromatherapist using essential oils for mother and child. Oh, and she uses them in her yoga classes too! Yep, she’s the real bomb!! Follow Angela on instagram to see more of her creations.

mermaid hair

Three things I’m always searching for…the best mascara, the best jeans and the best shampoo and conditioner. I may have found the answer to the shampoo and conditioner…Mermaid Hair! Nothing beats beach hair but if you don’t live by the ocean, this is a way to add texture and shine to create those natural beach waves.

What girl wouldn’t want mermaid hair? Think about Ariel…she has the best hair of any of the Disney princesses.  Mermaid hair sounds so romantic…long silky braids, the smell of the sea and Botechelli waves.

You know those days when you want to channel your inner Daryl Hannah from Splash? This will do it…Mermaid Hair smells the Pina Colada and a day at the beach and it’s super gentle (all natural) so it won’t dry out or flatten hair.

Mermaid’s collection of beauty products is inspired by the ultra-hydrating powers of sea kelp and essential oils. Each sweet-smelling, botanical formula is packed with vitamins and minerals that keep hair lustrous and skin rejuvenated.

My most favorite store in the world is Pish Posh Patchouli’s at Rosemary Beach. Patchouli’s is an apothecary boutique where you can design your signature scent at the custom scent bar; then select soaps, lotions, perfumes AND Mermaid shampoo!! This is where I first spotted Mermaid Hair. My little mermaid wanted to try it and now we both use it.

Mermaid Hair is a sweet mix of orange blossoms and coconut to leave your hair soft, shiny, and smelling incredible. Bonus…they also make a Mermaid Perfume.

Wishing you mermaid kisses and starfish wishes!

Peonies: the most romantic flower in the world

Pink peonies are my absolute favorite flower. They look like little balls of strawberry ice cream with layers and layers of soft fragrant flavors. Peonies are not available all year round…which is probably what makes people love them all the more. The end of peonies season is sadly here…if only they could last the whole summer.
Artist, Carmelo Blandino’s paintings of peonies help to make the season last longer… His paintings have intensity, color, and movement that make the viewer want to rub their nose all around it hoping to catch a whiff of the floral fragrance.
Peonies seem to be a nostalgic kind of flower. The best peony gardeners tend to be older growers…they might tell you that peony growing insures old age. These expert older gardeners might have their peonies in a bed with other old-fashioned flowers like gardenias, sweet peas, marigolds, hydrangeas…the kind of flowers that makes you nostalgic for your grandmother’s garden. I think most grandmothers stop and smell the roses…especially if they planted them.
The fattest and most scrumptious of all flowers, a rare fusion of fluff and majesty, the peony is now coming into bloom. ~Henry Mitchell
Nancy Reagan was known to be a romantic. It seems suiting that her favorite flowers were white peonies.
Nancy Reagan was not alone in her choice of flower, peonies are favored by brides all over the world because of their beautiful ruffles and feminine colors…it is the most romantic flower. They make a stunning addition to any bouquet. They were in my bouquet and I can still picture and smell them…heavenly.
If you’re planing to grow peonies, it’s helpful to know that like children, young peonies take time to develop. They usually need a few years to establish themselves, bloom, and grow. When planted in spring, peonies may not bloom for two years or more. The eyes of the root should be planted facing upward, no more than 2 inches below the surface of the soil. Peonies that do not sprout in the spring may have been planted too deeply or may have been damaged by frost if they were planted too late in the year.

Carmelo Blandino wrote this poem about flowers he paints and inner beauty. I imagine peonies in particular when reading it…a heart as a peony. See what you think…

It takes courage to live a life.
Without courage the flower would not allow itself to stand up and bloom.
We need courage to be attentive to life and to live by its truths.
To remain resolute in keeping the four corners of your life straight regardless of what others say about you.

Without courage the petals wouldn’t open, and then it’s great inner beauty would never be seen or manifest in the physical.

The high vibration of flowers with their radiant color and life, are there to remind us of our true essence,
and of our true potential as humans on earth.
Do you have the courage to live a life of unfoldment and
allow your petals to be seen for their glory, and to be glorious in your courage?
Of course you do, of course you can. By listening to the
personal flower within you. Your heart.

Wishing you beautiful flowers until the next peony season and the “courage” to listen to the flower within you.

Korean Skincare

When you see a Korean woman, chances are that you won’t be able to guess their age. Korean woman are obsessed with beauty and know all the best beauty secrets and products. American women want in on K-beauty too! The best part is that we don’t have to fly across the world to get our hands on it. We love Korean beauty because it offers natural quality ingredients with happy designs that make you LOVE skincare routines.

I went to an Asian grocery store with my friend Tomo once and had so much fun shopping the beauty aisle…the walls were filled with beauty products. She convinced me to try some sheet masks and I’ve been hooked ever since. Asian grocery stores, Birchbox, Sephora and Sokoglam are great places to shop if you’d like to sample some of the best Korean beauty products.

Korean beauty is known for their enormous quantity of sheet masks, BB creams, essences, and serums packaged to look fun and cheerful. K-beauty products are all the rage and have been for quite some time.

What should you try?

How ever long you spend applying your makeup, should be the same time amount cleaning it off. The Korean mentality is more comprehensive and detailed than the American approach to skincare. It all starts with a cleanser. Try Phytowash cleansing foam and massage in circles to brighten skin.

Exfoliating with a natural scrub like the Skin Food Black Sugar Wash Off Mask really brings your skin back to its younger days. Concentrate on the t-zone or where you see blackheads.

Toner can help remove pollutants along with any residue from your cleansers, while also restoring your skin’s pH balance. It soothes and preps your skin to absorb the next step…the essence. Place SU:M37 Water-full Skin Refresher/Toner onto a cotton pad and wipe your face and neck.

The Essence
The foundation of a Korean beauty routine starts with hydration…considered the most important step to Korean women. Waterest essence is a soothing moisturizer that purifies and hydrates skin with a blend of natural botanicals.

Serums (Ampoules) are super-concentrated versions of essences, and are often referred to as serums and boosters. Dr. Jart+ Premium Time Returning Serum is an intensive anti-wrinkle serum that supports natural regeneration and restoration of damaged skin and wrinkles. Serums help to brighten skin, fading sunspots, and smoothing fine lines.

Sheet Mask
My favorite product! Wrap the face for fifteen to twenty minutes to intensively deliver hydrating and anti-aging ingredients to the skin. Use one or two times a week for an instant and lasting glow. Manefit Bling Bling Hydro Gel Masks are soaked in ingredients like collagen, which they in turn soak into your skin. Korean sheet masks is luxuriously thick, cooling and soothing and gives my skin intense hydration.

Eye Cream
Gently tap Etude House Moistfull Collagen Eye Cream around the eye area for better absorption.

Korean women are all about layering…generously massage the Etude House Moistfull Collagen Emulsion (the Korean translation for “moisturizer”) with gentle strokes so that it really sinks deep into your skin.

BB Cream
BB cream stands for beauty balm. It’s packed with benefits and SPF. Use the BB cream in the morning for a dewy and luminous look. Try Dr. Jart+ Premium BB SPF 45 for the ultimate BB.

What’s the order of application?

A smart method for applying your Korean products is from the most lightweight to the heavier textures. This is because lightweight textures are designed to penetrate (usually essences or serums) versus heavier textures that create a barrier to keep skin hydrated (usually moisturizers or creams). So after cleansing, use your toner, then serum or essence, then moisturizer.

Why is it great?

There’s a huge difference between the American approach…the faster I can get ready the better. In the American ideal, beauty is supposed to look effortless…a sun-kissed California girl. Korean women devote much more time to their skin and it shows. In Korea, beauty is associated with hard work. Helena Rubenstein said that “there are no ugly women, only lazy ones.” Korean skin care is a part of every day self-care…not about vanity. K-beauty is amazingly effective and fun! Like Mikey said, “Try it, you’ll like it!”

Ski Colorfully: Packing List

Skiing is too much fun not to dress bright and happy. Maybe you just came back from the slopes and wish you were still there or your planning for an upcoming spring ski and checking things off your list. Either way, it’s fun to channel the skier the way Dutch artist, Sabastiaan Bremer does. Whether you’re post-ski, during-ski or apres-ski…hit the slopes cheerfully and colorfully!

Ski necessities

A warm, waterproof ski jacket and snow pants are a must.

Find some colorful goggles to hit the slopes in.

Layers are the key to staying warm and dry in the mountains.

Thermal leggings & undershirts
When you’re warm on the top of the mountain, you’ll be so glad.

Good quality ski socks
Your toes will thank you!

Take a pair of jeans for the time you’ll spend off the slopes. Casual is key…everyone will want to be comfortable after skiing all day.

Something cozy for both skiing and apres-ski. These Norwegian sweaters are timeless.

For the apres-ski time in the hot tub.

Bring a pair of comfortable winter boots for walking through snow.

Dry shampoo
Give your hair a break on your ski vacation.

Don’t get sunburned! Protect your skin from the rays that bounce off of the bright white snow.

Bring waterproof gloves and mittens. These sweet mittens will warm your heart and hands.

Bring a colorful hat…maybe with a fur pom!

If it’s a nice day, sunglasses might be more comfortable than goggles. These sunglasses are my favorites!

GoPro Camera
Bring your GoPro so you can capture your kids runs.

Hand and toe warmers
Just in case…better comfortable than sorry.

Just in case…

The mountains are calling, it’s time to ski…colorfully!

Juice Your Way to Beautiful Skin

Drinking fresh juice is a great way to start the day. Sometimes you wake up in the morning and you just feel and look so tired…we all need to reset and restart. The cure for that feeling is fresh juice. It’s like drinking liquid health. Not only can it make you feel good but it can improve your skin’s appearance and make you glow like a pearl. It’s easy to look your best when you feel good about what you’re putting in your body. If you’re dreaming of having a flawless face that requires little makeup then start juicing. Drink your way to gorgeous skin and let your inner beauty shine through.

Here are ten foods that can help you get amazing skin:

ApplesApples not only keep you healthy but they help to give you flawless and glowing skin. Apples contain antioxidants that prevent wrinkles.

Pears: Pears help to keep our skin smooth and soft. They are rich in vitamin C and K and help keep wrinkles away and skin clear and moisturized.

Cucumbers: Cucumbers are rich in silica and can improve the complexion of your skin and because it’s high in water content, it also keeps your skin hydrated.

Lemons: Both lemons and oranges are high in vitamin C and act as a good cleanser to give you flawless skin.

Carrots: Carrots are loaded in vitamin A which prevents blemishes and wrinkles.

Celery: Celery, like cucumbers, help to hydrated the skin and gives you a natural glow.

Beets: Beets are full of vitamin A, C and K which reduces blemishes, rejuvenates the skin, prevent blemishes and wrinkles.

Strawberries: Strawberries make the skin younger and smoother, whiten teeth, and reduce under-eye puffiness.

Kale: Kale is full of fiber, sulphur and rich in vitamins A and C. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits that helps you stay less bloated, which can prevent puffiness on the face.

Ginger: Ginger improves the appearance of your skin by removing toxins and stimulating circulation. It improves elasticity making your skin more firm and youthful.

Try these recipes to get you started juicing:

Orange Surprise

Carrot juice is surprisingly sweet, and goes well with oranges.

  • 3 oranges
  • 4 carrots, chopped
  • a few big handfuls of kale
  • 1 knob of fresh ginger

Cut oranges and carrots into chunks, and remove big seeds or pits. You don’t need to worry about those in fruits like apples and pears…a juicer will filter them out. It’s a good idea to alternate between soft pieces and hard ones. Finish with the hard produce to push through anything that’s stuck.

Apple Delight

  • 1 medium beet, chopped
  • 1/2 lemon, chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 3 sweet apples, chopped

Press all ingredients through a juice extractor. Stir and serve immediately.

Green Refresher

  • 2 pears
  • 1 knob of fresh ginger
  • 1 chopped cucumber
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped

Press pear, ginger, cucumber, and celery through a juice extractor. Stir and serve immediately.

Berry Blend

  • 3 oranges
  • 1 carrot, chopped
  • 2 cups strawberries, hulled
  • 1 cup raspberries

Press ingredients through a juice extractor and serve immediately.

Happy juicing!

How To Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Un Petit Guide

French women “don’t get fat,” are always elegant and effortlessly chic… How do they do it? We non-Parisian woman can learn something from Caroline de Maigret and her co-authors Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan and Sophie Mas in How to be Parisian Wherever You Are? Love, Style, and Bad Habits.  I imagine these four women to be the French equivalent to the American Sex and the City girls…”without her girls gang, the Parisian is incomplete.”

There’s hope for us non-Parisian women because the most famous Parisienne women are foreigners: Marie Antoinette, Josephine Baker, Romy Schneider, Jane Birkin…

Add some joie de vivre to your winter and read How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are. It will make you laugh as you slip into their ballet flats and tap into your inner Parisian.

  • Wear a black bra under your white blouse.
  • Do not wear too much make-up, too many colors, too many accessories.
  • Do not wear logos. You are not a billboard.
  • Do not wear sweatpants. No man should ever see you in those. Except your gym teacher. Leggings are tolerated.
  • All you need is one signature item: the one you wear when you need to feel strong.
  • Do not match your purse with your outfit.
  • Wear navy blue with black. (And red with pink, a la Yves Saint Laurent.)
  • Don’t follow trends. (Trends follow you)
  • Your bag is not an accessory; it’s your home (…) If it is beautiful on the outside, that’s just to keep up appearances. And so that no one ever wonders what’s inside.
  • A small silk scarf is an essential to the Parisian wardrobe.
  • The Parisian wears very little jewelry: a fine chain, a simple ring, a family heirloom. It is as discreet as possible.
  • Parisians love going to the market. To go to a market, dress casually and carry a large basket over your shoulder.

  • Either go all gray or no gray hair. Salt and pepper is for the table.
  • Short, clean nails, sometimes worn with nail polish but not always. Simplicity is key. In fact, the French manicure is something of an enigma: it is the exact opposite of French chic. The Parisian does not understand the point of it and never wears it.
  • Do not have lip augmentation. It makes you look like a duck.
  • Of all the precious fabrics you love, your skin is without a doubt the one that fascinates you most of all.
  • In Paris, the rules are clear; you anticipate, you prepare for the future, but you’re never totally correct.
  • You never go to bed without taking off your makeup.
  • Cheat on your perfume, but only on cold days.
  • What you need for a restorative hair mask: Rum, honey, two egg yolks, and the juice of a lemon.
  • Enjoy the face you have today. It’s the one you’ll wish you have ten years from now.
  • Always look as if you are gazing at the sunset. Even during rush hour in the Metro. Even when picking up frozen pizza from the supermarket.

  • When pregnant…The word pregnant is an adjective. It describes you, it doesn’t define you. You replace your Bloody Marys with Virgin Marys, but that’s it: you’re no saint.
  • The Parisian is a selfish woman. A loving mother, yes, but nonetheless incapable of forgetting herself completely.
  • The Parisian does not stop existing the day she has a child. She does not give up her somewhat adolescent lifestyle, her nights out with friends, her parties, or her mornings-after feeling worse for wear.
  • According to the Parisian, this joie de vivre is the best way of inspiring children to grow up. And also the best way for mothers to never miss the lives they led before they had children.
  • A Parisian never hires a babysitter who is too pretty, always finding the less attractive one to be far more competent.
  • You don’t share the photos from your last ultrasound with your entire address book: you still have some secrets.

Hosting a diner party:

  • Never say “Bon Appetit!” when you sit down for a meal.
  • On Saturday night, the Parisian stays home and hosts intimate dinner parties. The true Parisian never goes out in restaurants and nightclubs on Saturday night.
  • When hosting a diner, the trick lies not in being a gourmet chef, but rather mastering a couple of recipes perfectly. One of them should be easy so that you can rustle it up at the last-minute. The other should be very complicated, to wow your friends.
  • The cook should never appear stressed out – everything must look effortless.
  • Your glasses on the table don’t have to match but they should be clear (nothing colored) and should all have stems.
  • At a Parisian’s table you will often find Laguiole folding knives, named after the French village where they are made.
  • Parisian’s favorite dinner topics: Politics, sex and adultery.

  • Laughing at yourself is better for your health than crying.
  • Do not take yourself too seriously.
  • The Parisian never gives too much away. When it comes to revealing herself, she follows one golden rule: less is definitely more.
  • Take the time to take the time because nobody else will do it for you.
  • Drink at least one glass of red wine between 7:30pm and 10:30pm
  • Asprin in the water makes your roses live a little longer.
  • Cancel your gym session to have a drink with your friend who’s just been dumped.
  • Be thankful that you always wear nice lingerie – you never know what might happen.
  • One should never attempt to hug a Parisian. La bise (kiss on the cheeks) may bring faces together, but bodies must stay apart.

  • The Parisian is in love with the idea of love. To a pathological degree. Her entire life revolves around the flutterings of her heart.
  • Statistically speaking, Parisians don’t often get married, but every Parisian dreams of her wedding.
  • The man carries your suitcases and your shopping – a woman only ever carries her handbag.
  • When it comes to kissing, the Parisian does it the same way she does everything else: with cinematic flair. Preferably all kissing should take place in the middle of the street. The city is after all her stage and she treats each kiss like a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
  • Always be baisable: when standing in line at the bakery on a Sunday morning, buying champagne in the middle of the night, or even picking the kids up from school. You never know.
  • The man pours your wine; you should never have to touch the bottle. It suits him- that way you’ll get drunk faster.
